Family literacy is an approach to helping families get out of poverty by fostering intergenerational learning that leads to better job skills, higher incomes, increased self-sufficiency, and improved health and well-being. Family literacy programs provide opportunities for parents to lift themselves up through academics, language, and workforce-skills building, while also teaching them how to better support and engage in their children’s education which leads to better academic outcomes.” Powering families out of poverty through family literacy
The four main components of family literacy are:
- Children’s education
- Adult education
- Parent education
- Parent-child interactive activities
Our mobile library, our parenting program, our Read and Feed summer program and the tutoring we offer are all part of our family literacy program. We have two more goals. First, we want to begin parent-child literacy-focused activities designed to foster a love of reading and writing. These will provide families with new skills, strategies for at-home learning, and a deeper understanding of the literacy process. Our second goal is to train volunteers who want to come alongside these families as mentors. Mentors can be a huge asset in helping families follow through with goals. There will be struggles along the way in getting out of poverty, but mentors can build relationships and encourage them in their walk as parents strive to grow in literacy, job and life skills, and in their role as their child’s first and most important teacher.
Would you consider volunteering as a mentor?
– We will offer training to equip you, so you will be confident in your role.
Or will you consider donating to support the training of our new mentors?
